How Cool Is Grass?

By Donna Carey

With a hot summer upon us, consider keeping your grass a bit longer for the next few months — unless it starts turning brown, of course.

Uncut grass keeps the soil at around 19.5°C. Grass cut at a level of 10 cm maintains cooler, moister soil than a closely shaved lawn, which can bake and crack in the heat.

Longer grass shades the soil, reduces evaporation, and supports a richer community of insects and soil life. A small change in your mowing routine can make your patch noticeably more resilient through summer.
